Things You Can Do At Work…

Consider Being Transparent About Your Grief

Being transparent and vulnerable about your loss can be so beneficial. Telling the people you work with that you’re grieving can lead to them being compassionate, empathetic, and somewhat understanding when they notice a change in the way you work, react, or engage with others. It may also lead to them providing you with an appropriate amount of support as you grieve. This can look like this:

  • a boss, supervisor, or manager approving…

    • additional breaks

    • more time off

    • granting you grace if you run behind schedule

    • or allowing you to work from home

  • a coworker assisting you with some of your work responsibilities

  • the entire staff giving you more space to be to yourself if that’s what you feel you need at the time

Engage In Coping Skills Such As…

  • Journaling

      • When you’re feeling overwhelmed by emotions while you’re at work, consider taking a few minutes to write down…

        • the negative emotions you’re experiencing

        • the gratitude you have for all the joyful memories you’ve shared with the person or thing you’re grieving

        • the words you would say to them if you were with them right now

  • Meditation

    • Listen to your mind, body, or intuition, and take a meditation break whenever you feel like you need one. A mixture of deep breathing, mindfulness, and silence may be just what you need when dealing with strong emotions at work.

Try Your Best To Avoid Experiencing Burnout While Grieving

    • It is very common for someone who’s grieving to experience burnout at their workplace. This is typically due to them taking on the same amount of work if not more than they did prior to experiencing grief and loss. The reason why burnout is so common at a time when someone is grieving is that people usually continue to work while they’re…

      • processing more emotions

      • taking in more information

      • planning more arrangements

      • getting things organized

        and, as a result…

      • not getting enough sleep

      • forgetting to eat/drink

      • always rushing

      • and not getting a moment to rest

To Avoid Burnout While Grieving, You Can…

  • take breaks

  • be sure not to take on any additional tasks unless you have the capacity to do so

  • take time off when appropriate

    • You don’t have to be sick or be going on vacation to take time off. Take a mental health day whenever you feel the need to. You deserve some time off, especially in your time of grieving.

Things You Can Do Outside Of Work…

Join a Grief Support Group

Your experience with grief is personal. You don’t necessarily have to share the details of what you're going through with anyone. Especially if you don’t feel comfortable doing so. But not sharing your thoughts and feelings with anyone can lead to you feeling isolated and lonely.

By attending a grief support group, or by going to group therapy, you’ll be surrounded by a group of people who will be able to relate to what you’re going through. Through shared stories, time, and engagement with others, you’ll start to feel much less isolated and alone. Instead, you’ll feel seen, heard, and supported.

Engage in a Group Oriented Hobby, Sport, or Club

Just like joining a grief group, this will remind you that you’re not alone and that you are capable of experiencing joy, satisfaction, fulfillment, connection, excitement, and happiness, even in the midst of your loss.

Stay Connected with Family and Friends

Consider socializing with friends even when you feel like isolating. You may be surprised to find yourself laughing, smiling, and enjoying their company much more than you thought you would.

If the thought of connecting with them in person feels way too draining, remember you can also stay connected via…

  • Phone Call

  • Text Message

  • Video Chat

    • If any of that feels like too much then it’s totally okay to respect how you feel and give yourself some more alone time
