Therapy is a very one-sided relationship. It’s all about the client. And there’s nothing wrong with that! You show up for so many people in your personal and professional life. Now it’s time for someone to show up for you. Someone who will focus on helping you…

  • learn more about yourself

    • and why you think, feel, and do the things you do

  • cope with any and all issues you may be dealing with.

With that being said, it’s okay to be curious about the person who’s helping you. It’s okay to ask your therapist personal or professional questions. If they ever feel uncomfortable, they’ll have the ability to set healthy boundaries and display appropriately assertive communication skills. This will lead them to say something like…

“Hey, I don’t feel comfortable talking about that; it feels a bit too personal for me to share. Although I am open to certain personal questions, I would like for this conversation to be focused on you. This is your time and I don’t want to take away from that”.

If you get this type of response from a therapist, there’s no need to feel bad about being curious. Many adults who are considering going to therapy are curious. Once again, there’s nothing wrong with being curious or expressing your curiosity. As a black therapist in Florida who also goes to therapy, I get it. You just want to know something about this somewhat mysterious individual you call your therapist.

At the end of the day, the client and therapist interaction is a relationship. It is a professional relationship, but a relationship nonetheless. And most people want to know something about the person they’re entering into a relationship with. So I have no problem being transparent.
